Twenty suspected smugglers have been prosecuted in connection with numerous smuggling activities across Katsina State, the Custom Area Comptroller, Kaduna/Katsina Command, Gidado Muhammed, has said.
Speaking with Daily Trust, Muhammad said that many of the suspects were arrested in the last two months because of their involvement in smuggling of commodities with a duty paid value of close to N135 million.
He listed the items recovered from the suspects to include 4,929 bags of rice, 11, 844 jerry cans of vegetable oil, 178 used vehicles and 133 used motorcycles, 1490 bales of second hand clothing and textiles, 1,134 cartons of pharmaceutical products, 2599 and 371 cartons of pasta products.
He said that the command would continue to apprehend smugglers to serve as a deterrent to others, adding: “We will never relent in our effort in arresting smugglers at all times and prosecute them in accordance with the stipulated laws of the land. we will smoke smugglers out of their holes and make the business unattractive.’’
He enjoined people, especially those residing in border areas, to cooperate with his men towards ensuring that due procedures were followed in the process of bringing in commodities through the land borders.
