Unbelievable! Five Hospitalized After TUT University Clashes

The Tshwane University of Technology (TUT) on Tuesday said five people were hospitalised after a violent clash between police, students and striking workers at the Pretoria Campus.

Meanwhile, Netcare 911 reported on social media that seven security guards had been injured on a “Gauteng campus”.

#InSourcingMustFall spokesperson Weizmann Hamilton said: “The clash was caused by a private security company that brought in a group of people to attack workers, so workers had no choice but to defend themselves.”

TUT spokesperson Willa De Ruyter said no fatalities had been reported.

De Ruyter said the institution had in October 2015 obtained a court interdict preventing the disruption of lectures and university operations.

In a statement issued at the time, TUT said: “To prevent any further disruption of activities and intimidation of both staff and students, management yesterday obtained an urgent High Court interdict against structures and individuals. The interdict prevents the respondents and their supporters from, among others, taking part or instigating disruptive or riotous behaviour that infringes the rights of any staff member, student or visitor to TUT’s premises.”
